Social Networking Works-If You Do It Right

We've talked a bit about doing business on the social sites like Facebook and MySpace. Now I want to go into it a little deeper.

A couple of weeks ago Mike Dillard of Magnetic Sponsoring and Better Networker posted a YouTube video by Perry Belcher that summed up beautifully how to use Social Networking sites. You can see it for yourself here:

Perry likens these sites to being at a party and he's exactly right.  Just this morning I was checking out my friend requests in Facebook and it was amazing to see the amount of people who "get it" and the overwhelming majority who don't.

Please don't think I'm friend bashing. These folks just haven't learned the social etiquette that goes along with networking online (and there are definitely social rules to follow if you want to become a part of the community).

Here's some Do's and Don'ts. First the Do's:

1) Do send along a little message to introduce yourself. Tell the person how you found them and why you want to connect. For example,"I see you're an internet marketer" or "I read on your profile that you have a beagle, so do I" Finding common ground builds rapport. I'm way more inclined to respond first to the folks who took the time to send a message.

2) Do remember that there is a real person with a real life on the other end of the friend request. So, if someone doesn't get back to you right away, relax, they could be busy. I know people who get all wigged out if they don't get a reply within an hour. It's all good...ohmmm. :-)

3) Do be selective in sending out your friend requests. I'm not suggesting being a snob or anything, but if after checking out their profile you wouldn't want to sit down and have coffee with that person, find someone else. I remember when I first started on MySpace and was browsing profiles. Scary, very scary some of them. If their mothers only knew...

Now some Don'ts:

1) Don't (and I repeat, don't) hit up people with a sales pitch for your business. Especially in your initial friend request. Just this morning on Facebook I had a request from a guy who"saw that I was an internet marketer and he owns a software company and has a product that would help me stop spam". That's what he said in his friend request. Maybe he does and it's awesome, but by using that as a first contact message, I'll probably pass.

2) Don't just send out a friend request with no greeting. People want to know why they're being contacted and you'll find you get a much beter acceptance rate that way. (and remember item #1 above)

3) Don't focus just on your business when you're putting together your profile or meeting people online. Anyone who comes across as a blatant commercial is much less likely to be successful marketing on the internet. Show people that there's more to you than your company. Talk about family, pets, hobbies, all the stuff that makes you interesting. Also, I've seen the folks who over promote their business get reported for spamming. Account deleted. End of story.

I hope some of these tips helped. If you're just getting started on the Social Networking sites, I'll be happy to help you and look over your profile. Just leave me a comment below.

Just think of sites like Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn and others like any other party or offline networking event. Put the other person and their needs first and you'll win every time.
